OVERDRIVE
Overdrive is a game played on a field as illustrated in the figure above. Two ALLIANCES, one red and one blue, composed of three teams each, compete in each match. The object of the game is to attain a higher score than your opponent ALLIANCE.
The goal of the game is to circle the track and score as many points as possible by hurdling the ball over the overpass or herding it around the track. You have two minutes to do this task, as well as a 15 second autonomous, or Hybrid period for your robot to run a program allowing it to move without the use of a controller. In total, you have 2 minutes and 15 seconds to score as many points as you possibly can.
Game terms :
- ALLIANCE:
A set of three FIRST Robotics Competition TEAMS that work together during a
MATCH to play FIRST Overdrive against an opposing ALLIANCE. ALLIANCES are identified
during the MATCH by their assigned color, either red or blue.
- CROSSING:
The act of a TRCKBALL or ROBOT crossing a LANE MARKER or FINISH LINE. A TRACKBALL or ROBOT shall have CROSSED a line when all parts of the object, while traveling in a counterclockwise direction, have completely passed through the plane.
- HERDING:
Controlling the position and movement of a TRACKBALL while the TRACKBALL is not
supported by any ROBOT shall be considered HERDING. Both continuous and intermittent contact between the ROBOT and TRACKBALL (bumping, plowing or dribbling ) a TRACKBALL around the TRACK are all considered forms of HERDING.
- HURDLE:
When a TRACKBALL CROSSES a FINISH LINE while passing above the OVERPASS
and then contacts either the floor or another ROBOT before re-contacting the originating ROBOT.
- IMPEDING:
Preventing or obstructing an opposing ROBOT’S ability to proceed around the TRACK
in the direction of traffic.
- MATCH:
A single iteration of play in which ALLIANCES attempt to complete the goals of the FIRST
Overdrive game during a competition.
- COACH:
A student or adult mentor designated as the team advisor during the MATCH and
identified as the person wearing a "COACH" pin or button. There is one COACH per TEAM.
- DRIVER:
A pre-college student team member responsible for operating and controlling the
ROBOT. There are two DRIVERS per TEAM.
- ROBOCOACH:
A pre-college student team member designated as the only team member
permitted to provide external stimuli to the ROBOT from either of the two ALLIANCE
ROBOCOACH STATIONS. There is one ROBOCOACH per TEAM.:
Game play and SCORING
Each robot must continuously move around the track unless they are hurdling. If a robot is hurdling and gets bumped by another robot in which it will have 6 seconds to move before the robot gets a penalty.
- Hybrid:
During Hybrid period the robot will get 4 points for each line it crosses even if it is the opponent’s line.
Each trackball removed from the overpass will be worth 8 points.
- Teleoperated:
During the Teleoperated period you will only earn 2 points for each time you pass your line.
For each trackball a robot herds over the line it will earn 2 points.
Each trackball you hurdle over the overpass will earn you 8 points
When the match is over each ball your team has on the overpass will earn 12 points. Unless it is being supported by a robot.
