FIRST Robotics Competition

The West Islip School district is excited to announce that West Islip High School will be competing in the 2002 FIRST robotics competition hosted by School to Business Partnerships of Long Island at Suffolk County Community College.  The project kick-off is January 5th and will last for six weeks.

During these six short weeks the students participating in the robotics competition will design, fabricate, and test a fully functional robot to the specifications and rules established at the kick-off.

At the end of the six week time limit, the robot will be shipped and placed in storage until the competition March 14th-16th at Suffolk Community College.

What is FIRST?

FIRST is First is:

an organization which provides multiple programs which motivate and challenge young children. They offer programs such as the Robotics Competition, the LEGO league, and much more. FIRST's objective is to provoke interest in young children in the science and technology field. FIRST started 10 years ago with the FIRST Robotics Competition, it featured 28 teams competing in a New Hampshire high school gym in a 14 x 14 foot playing field.  This year is different.

This years competition:

This will be West Islip High School's first appearance in the FIRST Robotics Competition. The object of the game this year is to place balls into the goals and positioning the goals and/or robots in the scoring zones. All of the teams are paired up into two-team alliances. Each team consists of three students and a mentor. There are 60 size 5 soccer balls which are inflated to the manufacturer's specifications. There are 3 goals which are equally spaced on the playing field. The playing field is divided up into 5 zones. You are awarded 1 point for each ball in the goal, 10 points for each goal in your goal zone (zone 2 or 4), 10 points for each robot in your robot zone (zone 1 or 5).  The catch to this years game is that you only score what your opponent scores multiplied by three.  So the game becomes more difficult because you cannot shut out your opponents and expect to win.
